A Simple Christmas Learning Activity
One day, I came up with this activity out of the blue. Nothing fancy—just simple and fun! I grabbed a plain white piece of paper and drew a big green triangle for a Christmas tree (because simple is always key!). Then I added a small brown stump at the bottom.
Inside the tree, I wrote my child’s name letters randomly—each letter appearing a few times. For example, if your child’s name is Sophie, you might sprinkle several S’s, O’s, P’s, H’s, I’s, and E’s all around the tree.
Next, I added a small color code box at the bottom of the page. Each letter was assigned a color—for example, S = yellow, O = blue, P = green, and so on. Using dot markers, my preschooler got to “decorate the tree” by stamping each letter the right color.
Both my little preschoolers loved it so much they asked to do it again—with their middle and last names too!

What You’ll Need
- White paper or cardstock
- Green and brown markers (for the tree and stump)
- Dot markers (various colors)
- Regular markers or crayons (for writing letters and the color code box)

How to Make Your Own Christmas Tree Name Recognition Craft
- Draw a large green triangle for the tree and a small brown rectangle for the stump.
- Inside the tree, write your child’s name letters several times in random spots.
- Create a small color code box at the bottom of the page. Assign each letter a color.
- Hand your child the dot markers and have them find and stamp each letter with the matching color.
- Display their “decorated” tree for some festive preschool art that’s also educational! I love using this set of bulletin boards to display my children’s artwork!

Fun Variations
You can easily switch this activity up depending on what your child is learning!
- Letter recognition: Skip names and just fill the tree with random letters for your child to identify.
- Vowels only: Write a mix of letters, but have your child stamp only the vowels.
- Number recognition: Replace letters with numbers and create a color code for each.
- Sight words: Write beginning sight words and have your child decorate the tree as they find and read each one.
