A Simple Thanksgiving Craft

I started with a blank piece of paper and drew a simple turkey body. You could definitely find a free printable online if you want a neater look, but I just went with it in the moment. Then, I drew a few feathers and wrote a letter of each child’s name inside each one. My kids colored their turkeys and added googly eyes, a beak, and a little gobbler. It was a sweet and simple way to mix art with name recognition practice.

Why This Craft Is Great for Preschoolers

This turkey name recognition craft is perfect for preschool learning because it combines creativity and early literacy skills. Kids get to:

  • Practice recognizing and spelling their name
  • Strengthen fine motor skills
  • Learn letter sounds
  • Enjoy a hands-on holiday project

And the best part — you don’t need fancy materials or hours of prep. It’s simple, fun, and educational all at once.

What You’ll Need

Step-by-Step Directions

  1. Prep your workspace. Cover the table with newspaper or a placemat. Set out crayons, glue, scissors, and paper so everything is easy for little hands to reach.
  2. Draw the turkey body. On a blank sheet of paper, draw a simple turkey outline — an oval for the body and a small circle for the head. If you prefer, you can print a free turkey outline.
  3. Add drawn feathers. Lightly draw feathers around the turkey body, leaving room in each one to write a letter.
  4. Write letters on drawn feathers. Write one letter of your child’s name inside each feather.
  5. Color the turkey. Let your child color the turkey body and feathers however they like. Bright and bold colors make it fun and festive!
  6. Add googly eyes, beak, and gobbler. Help your child glue on the eyes, a small triangle beak (cut from yellow or orange paper), and a red gobbler.
  7. Cut out construction paper feathers. Cut several feather shapes from colorful construction paper — one for each letter in your child’s name.
  8. Write letters on the cut feathers. Write one letter of their name on each feather.
  9. Match the feathers. Have your child match each lettered feather to the corresponding feather on their turkey drawing. Encourage them to say each letter out loud.
  10. Glue the feathers down. Once they’ve matched all the letters, help them glue the feathers in place.
  11. Trim and let dry. Trim any extra paper if needed, then let it dry flat.
  12. Display their masterpiece! Hang their turkey on the fridge or a bulletin board for everyone to see. I love using these in the kid’s playroom and displaying their art work!
